My first encounter with acupuncture happened in 1997 when I injured my back and was taken to hospital. I was prescribed painkillers, anti-inflammatories and told to rest. After a few weeks I soon realised orthodox treatments were not going to help me. After making a few enquiries and consulting with my doctor I decided to book myself in for a Chiropractic treatment I had gradual improvement in my mobility and pain levels. However a had a lot of weakness, pain and aching in my lower back. At this point I was told I may have more luck with acupuncture. After being very worried about the needles I decided to give it a go. My scepticism wasn't justified as I made a significant recovery. From that day I have been fascinated with the medicine and culture surrounding it. I then enrolled at the Northern College of Acupuncture in York (this is one of the most respected colleges in the country) where I studied a 4 year post graduate diploma in acupuncture. I graduated in 2001.
