In keeping with Dorking's setting as a market town in the picturesque Surrey Hills, Chantecleer derives from the well-known fowl in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, combining Dorking's position on a Medieval Pilgrims' Way with the town's cockerel emblem. The associates, Bruce and Jean at Chantecleer share many decades of experience and enthusiasm in principally, antique furniture and provide a friendly welcome to browsers and enthusiasts alike. With showrooms on several levels, including the spacious half-timbered "barn" to the rear, visitors will find a broad selection of pieces displayed in a relaxed period ambiance.
Chantecleer opened for business in September 2009 on the site of a long-established period furniture showroom. It offers a selection of quality furnishing and collectors' pieces, principally from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries to private buyers and collectors. The re-opening reflects belief in West Street as a worthwhile destination for collectors and furnishing enthusiasts, with keen attention paid to the condition of each piece in terms of restoration, polishing and period character.
