For communications, it was common to see courier drivers/riders using a public phone box to call their base. In the event of a mechanical problem most drivers/operators would attempt their own repairs as most vehicle systems were mechanically actuated. Today all vehicle systems have central processing electronics units which require complex software just to diagnose the problem. Most businesses, in this period, considered their yearly spend, for marketing purposes, on the big paper directories as a major business decision. Today these directories have shrunk and it can be difficult to find one! Throughout this period we operated in the same day courier logistics market serving the needs of business. In those days every courier delivery business was as good as their map collection as there was no GPS Sat Nav and online mapping was still developing.
Our experience in the logistics business began in the early 90's. It was a time of technological transition from pagers to the first mobile phones and the beginnings of widespread available internet.
