Cotterell & Co was founded on 1 January 1990 by David Cotterell. For twenty years he had worked as a partner in a Birmingham firm of chartered accountants but he then decided that he should start his own firm in order to provide care to clients and staff in the way which was important to him. It was a risky step, but the firm grew quickly, at first in Birmingham, but from 1991 in Wolverhampton. That growth saw Barry Roberts joining him as a partner in 1993 and Andrew Storey in 2001. David still enjoys practice, and although he retired as a partner in 2005, he continues to work as a consultant for three days each week.
