The Health & Safety Executive has produced a code of practice (PM32) to help employees meet the requirements of the regulations. But briefly dealing with ‘Portable Appliances’ the code requires that all such appliances should be inspected regularly, usually annually and records kept to ensure regular checks are carried out. All electrical appliances fitted with a flexible power cable and plug, are classed as Portable. Appliances that are permanently connected to the power supply also fall within the regulations but are normally inspected at greater intervals. Most business insurance companies now require proof of equipment tests before honouring claims for personal injury.
The Electricity at Work Regulations came into force on 1st of April 1990 and is designed to ensure the safety of employees and the general public in the work place where electrical appliances are in use. The regulations require precautions to be taken to ensure that all electrical appliances are properly inspected and maintained in a safe working order.
