Chiropractic is a primary health-care profession that specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and overall management of conditions that are due to problems with the joints, ligaments, tendons, nerves and muscles, especially related to the spine and the effects they have on the nervous system. Chiropractic treatment involves safe, often gentle, specific spinal manipulation to free joints in the spine and other areas of the body that are not moving properly. Apart from manipulation, we may use a variety of techniques including ice, heat, and exercise as well as advice about posture and lifestyle. Chiropractic doesn’t involve the use of any drugs or surgery and is suitable for all ages. As defined by the World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC), Chiropractic is described as; ‘A health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal adjustment and other joint and soft-tissue manipulation. (World Federation of Chiropractic, 2001).
