The inabilty to communicate is one of the most difficult problems to overcome on your own. Most couples can benefit from talking to a counsellor who has been trained to help couples work through their difficulties within a professional and safe environment. The first counselling session will be a consultation which involves listening to your problems (some clients come on their own, with or without their partner’s knowledge). At the end of that session an assessment will then be made recommending the most appropriate therapy available to suit your needs. If your problems/issues are best managed by Relate then a programme of therapy will be agreed together; if not, then alternative agencies may be discussed.
Many of us experience difficulties managing our relationships with our partners at some stage in our lives. These problems can range from the emotional to the physical; intimacy and sex invariably suffer as a by-product. ‘‘I’m not sure I’m in love with him/her any more’’ is a common theme; early intervention with an impartial couple therapist can often help.
