Shi Kon Martial Arts was established in 1988 By Steve Rowe and named by his Iaido Instructor Okimitsu Fuji who drew the calligraphy that hangs in the Chatham Honbu Dojo. Shi Kon means 'Warrior Spirit' being the spirit or heart of a cultured Samurai warrior. Shi Kon is the coming together of Steve's training in Karate under the late Toru Takimazawa (he was the Chairman of the Takamizawa Institute of Karate), his Tai Chi training under James Uglow and Ma Lee Yang, his Iaido training under Okimitsu Fuji and Vic Cook and his Jodo training with Vic Cook.

Chum Kune Do is a Eurasian Martial Art, founded by Master Clifford Hyde-Gomes. Chum Kune Do is also known for awakening of knowledge. The fighting method is taken from the streets and was created by shizu Clifford for the 21st century.

This fascinating Martial Art of Wing Tjun serves well as a Self Defence as it uses the opponents own strength against themselves by absorbing the energy/force and issuing it back to them. Suitable for all ages, genders, shapes and sizes. Students come along for fitness, self defence, the holistic benefits of our system, physical health, mental fitness, stress relief, a healthier lifestyle, discipline and many other reasons.

At Westwood, we practise Shotokan Karate, the most popular style of karate in the world today. The style was introduced to Japan from Okinawa by the man widely considered to be the father of modern Karate-do, Master Gichin Funakoshi.

AFA has been set up to bring like minded people together who want to explore and train in these diverse and interesting arts, whether experienced martial artists or complete beginners, male or female. We train together without ego, helping each other to develop our skills with positive attitudes and good humour.

It is an honour and a privilege to be a Martial Arts Teacher. I teach with a balance of humour, play, intensity, and focus. My goal is to treat my students with as much respect as they treat me; to serve not only as a role model as a martial arts teacher, but as a compassionate and engaged human being.

Classes are held in Basildon on a Monday at Fairhouse Primary School at 7pm-8pm, on a Friday at Fairhouse Primary School at 7pm-8pm and on a Saturday morning at Luncies Road Meeting Hall at 10am-11am.
