The WPS Plastering Contractors team will take the time to sit with you to fully understand the vision you have for your home, taking notes throughout and advising on elements that impact on the render system, such as windows and doors.
The best time for us to get involved is in the early stages of the project so that you have a full understanding of what is required prior to the render being applied. It also means that we can ensure the finish is exactly what you want and advise on when the rendering needs to be completed within the project’s programme.
External Wall Insulation Systems (EWIS) is a thermally insulated, protective, decorative exterior cladding system which involves a number of layers. The picture below shows a typical make up:
1. The substrate - this can be any type and some may need some preparation work prior to commencing.
2-3. Insulation - this is mechanically and or adhesively fixed to the walls using either polystyrene or mineral fibreboard.
4-6. Basecoat - a reinforced render which has an alkaline mesh embedded into the
base coat the system its overall strength and to prevent cracking.
7-8. Finish - a decorative finish is applied. There are a number of finishes available as detailed below.
The thickness of the insulation depends on your requirements and also current building regulations, exposure and durability and whether the building might be subjected to other influences for example vandalism. Other materials used within the makeup of the property also need to be taken into consideration to ensure we reduce or remove the effects of poor insulating materials.
Monocouche Renders:
Monocouche or scratch renders are a decorative cement-based render that is pre-bagged and pre-coloured. Scratch render refers to the technique used to apply the render whereby it is applied on around 18mm thick and is then scratched back to create the overall finish of around 15mm. The term monocoque is a term to describe modern renders and differentiate it from the traditional render of sand and cement. Monocouche is actually a manufacturers name however the industry refers to most of these as monocouche or K-Rend. There are around 12-24 colours available to choose from depending on the manufacturer used.
Thin Coat Renders:
This is a wide category whereby the render is applied in multiple layers but the overall thickness is thinner than that of traditional or scratch renders. Typically these renders can be applied to a thickness of 6mm or above.
