Martial Arts Clubs

Classes are held in Basildon on a Monday at Fairhouse Primary School at 7pm-8pm, on a Friday at Fairhouse Primary School at 7pm-8pm and on a Saturday morning at Luncies Road Meeting Hall at 10am-11am.

New students should wear a t-shirt with tracksuit type trousers until they progress to a gi. Each week the students start the evening with exercises to improve physical fitness and also aerobic work to increase stamina. Training also includes learning to fall correctly/break falls essential for students as they progress through their syllabus work.

We carry out a full range of training including traditional line work and patterns, authentic free sparring and competition sparring. Our aim is to offer a fully rounded training experience with traditional teaching to uphold the five tenets of Taekwon-Do and follow the way, created and originally taught by General Choi and now continued by First Grand Master Rhee Ki Ha.

AFA has been set up to bring like minded people together who want to explore and train in these diverse and interesting arts, whether experienced martial artists or complete beginners, male or female. We train together without ego, helping each other to develop our skills with positive attitudes and good humour.

Originally Martial Arts was created to preserve life through self defense. Nowadays people come from a variety of different backgrounds all with their own reasons for wanting to train, some people wish to learn how to defend themselves and gain confidence, some wish to improve fitness, lose weight and tone up, some enjoy the competitive aspect of training and kickboxing/karate tournaments whilst others just want to have fun and meet new people.

At Westwood, we practise Shotokan Karate, the most popular style of karate in the world today. The style was introduced to Japan from Okinawa by the man widely considered to be the father of modern Karate-do, Master Gichin Funakoshi.

It is an honour and a privilege to be a Martial Arts Teacher. I teach with a balance of humour, play, intensity, and focus. My goal is to treat my students with as much respect as they treat me; to serve not only as a role model as a martial arts teacher, but as a compassionate and engaged human being.

Seitou Ryu Karate® is an established traditional Goju karate school with clubs across South Essex in South Ockendon, Grays and Wickford. We are affiliated to the Japan Karatedo Federation (JKF) Goju Kai, Goju Ryu Karatedo Seiwakai and the Shi Kon Martial Arts Association.
