It first opened its doors in November 1934 by Allan and Joan Coombs, back then the pet trade was in its infancy and so A Coombs Pet Centre began embarking in a trade that was not only new to them, but the whole country as well. The Husband and Wife team run the store together for many years. Allan was a very charismatic character and was very much involved in every part of his business. He enjoyed serving the customers and interacting with them on a daily basis. His passion for retail is what made the store so popular.

Starting small, firstly in the cellar of their High Street cottage in Hurstpierpoint, then taking over the front room as well, the business grew rapidly, necessitating the move to retail premises in the adjoining village of Ditchling in 1986. In 2009, the business expanded again, taking over the magnificent victorian Goods Shed adjacent to Hassocks Station. This gave the business more room for display, allowed the expansion of goods stocked, expanding into feed and bedding and an having an extensive private car park. Daughters Holly and Laura also joined, making it truly a family business.
