Shinri Karate Schools first opened in September 2010 by three professional Karate instructors, Gareth Richards, Phil Culley and Andy Wightman. The three co-owners had been long time friends and training partners and were even National champions together in team Kata. In January 2014 Andy Wightman decided to leave the partnership to concentrate on his own karate clubs and Gareth and Phil made the decision to continue what they had started.
We call ourselves Lion Pride by the way our Members are with each other coupled with the goal of training with both developing strength and elegance in our style. Our Family Class students are always willing to help our Little Lions, and our Instructors are always willing to help everyone. The way everyone are when together is similar to that of a Lion Pride, hence the name was adopted.

Aikido Aikido is a Japanese Martial Art created in the 1920’s by Morihei Ueshiba (1883 - 1969). One translation of Aikido is The Way of Harmony of Spiritâ€. Based on spherical movements by which an attackers aggressive force is turned against itself, Aikido uses energy from the opponent’s momentum to execute joint immobilisations and throws.
Aikido is a practical and effective defensive martial art working by using the attackers force back against them. It is a subtle art as the idea is to blend with an attack and re-direct it, rather than brute force blocking and counter striking. It is suitable for men and women, large or small, as physical size and strength are not requirements.
